What Motily is

A habit app for the 74 days before conception.

Motily is an iPhone app for men who are trying to conceive, planning to, or who have had a semen analysis and want to act on it. It turns the lifestyle research on sperm health into a daily routine you can actually keep.

Who it's for

Men aged 18 and over. Trying now, trying after a setback, going through fertility treatment alongside a clinic, or simply planning ahead. Partners get their own page without installing anything.

What it does

A two-minute daily check-in, a score for the day, a longer-term Overall score, streaks, a 74-day journey with a mascot called Remy, and a place to log semen analysis results against WHO reference limits.

What it doesn't do

It doesn't diagnose, treat or promise anything. Your score reflects your habits, not your fertility. Where the evidence is mixed the app says "may" and "is linked to", and it tells you when to talk to a doctor.

The daily check-in

Three steps, most days, for 74 days.

You don't need a new routine. You need to notice the one you already have, and nudge it.

1

Answer eight quick questions

How you slept, what you drank, whether the laptop sat on your lap. Each category is a tap or two, and Apple Health can prefill sleep and workouts. Two minutes, done.

2

See today's score and what moved it

Your score out of 100 climbs as you log. The categories with the strongest evidence, like nutrition, substances and sleep, carry the most weight, so you always know where the points are.

3

Keep the streak, watch the trend

A streak builds, Rest Days protect it when life happens, and your Overall score blends your baseline with your last seven days. Remy, your swimmer companion, celebrates the milestones.

What you track

Eight habits, one honest picture.

Every category in Motily is there because research links it to sperm health. Where the evidence is mixed, the app says so. Read the science and the sources.

Sleep

Around 7 to 8 hours a night is the sweet spot. Too little and irregular sleep are both linked to lower testosterone and weaker sperm quality.

Substances

Alcohol, smoking and caffeine. Smoking is one of the most consistently confirmed factors, and heavy drinking is linked to poorer sperm quality.

Heat

Laptops on your lap, hot tubs, saunas, tight underwear. Extra heat around the testicles can temporarily lower sperm production, and it's reversible.

Exercise

Moderate and regular beats none or extreme. Aim for 25 to 45 minutes of moderate activity most days.

Nutrition

More whole, unprocessed food. Antioxidants, omega-3s, zinc, selenium and folate are the nutrients worth knowing about.

Mood & stress

Ongoing stress is linked to hormonal changes that can affect testosterone and sperm production over time. Small, repeatable resets help most.

Hydration

Semen is mostly water. Roughly 2 to 3 liters a day is a reasonable target, and the app is honest that this one rests on general guidance.

Intercourse

Newer research suggests ejaculating roughly every 1 to 2 days is linked to better sperm movement and healthier DNA than long gaps.

The 74-day journey

Why 74 days?

Because the sperm you'll have in two and a half months are being built right now, and habits change what gets built.

Sperm aren't kept in stock. They're made continuously in the testes through a process called spermatogenesis: stem cells divide to build up a supply, those cells go through a special kind of division that halves and reshuffles their genetic material, the results physically transform (growing a tail and compacting their DNA into a streamlined head), and finally they spend a couple of weeks in the epididymis learning to swim. The classic estimate for the whole process is about 74 days, so anything you change today, from cutting back on drinking to sleeping properly, takes roughly that long to show up in the sperm you actually produce. That's why Motily's journey is 74 days long, with each stretch tied to the habits that matter most while that stage is happening.

Sources on exact timing don't agree to the day, so the phases below are deliberately rough. Motily never shows you an exact day cutoff. The science page has the timeline and the sources.

Roughly the first two to three weeks

Division & multiplication

Stem cells in the testes divide repeatedly to build up the raw supply. This stage sets the volume for everything that follows.

Steady nutrition and good sleep support healthy cell division from the start.
Roughly the next three to four weeks

Reshaping into spermatids

Meiosis halves the chromosome count and reshuffles genetic material into smaller, genetically distinct cells.

Some research suggests this is a more sensitive window for oxidative stress: smoking, drinking and stress may matter more here.
Roughly the next few weeks

Taking shape

Each round spermatid grows a tail, compacts its DNA and sheds extra cytoplasm until it looks like a recognizable sperm cell.

Testicular temperature plays a real role while cells reshape, so avoiding excess heat is thought to count most here.
Roughly the final two weeks

Learning to swim

New sperm travel into the epididymis, where they gain the ability to swim and the readiness to fertilize an egg.

No dramatic transformation left, just steady maintenance. Consistency carries a good stretch all the way through.
Semen analysis

Bring your lab report. Get context, not a verdict.

Add the numbers from a semen analysis (volume, concentration, total count, motility, and optional measures like morphology or DNA fragmentation) and Motily shows each one against the WHO 6th edition reference limits, then tracks how they move between reports. It's a reference range, never a diagnosis: interpreting a lab report is your clinician's job, and the app says so.

Built to be honest

Supports and informs. Doesn't diagnose or promise.

Motily is a lifestyle tool, not a medical device. Your score is an estimate built from your habits, not a measure of your fertility. Where the evidence is preliminary, like hydration or epigenetics, the copy says "may" and "is linked to" rather than pretending certainty. If you've been trying for 12 months (or 6, if your partner is 35 or older), talk to a specialist. That's a proactive step, not a sign anything's wrong.

For partners and friends

A page for her. No install, no account.

Share a link and a 6-character code from Profile, and your partner gets a page that shows where you are in your 74 days, your streak, and whether today's check-in is done. She can send a nudge. She never sees your answers, your score or your reports, and either of you can disconnect at any time.

If she wants to, she can also share her fertile window, so it shows up on your Today tab when timing matters most. That part is Premium, and it's opt-in for both of you.

Prefer a mate to a partner? Pair with a friend as your Wingman and keep a shared streak: it counts the days you both logged, and one miss a week is forgiven automatically.

Who's building this

One person, in the UK.

Motily is built and run by a solo founder in the United Kingdom, not a studio or a clinic. That means replies to hello@motily.app come from the person who wrote the code, and it means the app is small enough to change quickly when beta testers say something's wrong.
